The function of a watermark is so that no one else can take your work. If a watermark has your name or signature, then people can't take it and say that it's theirs, since someone else's name is on it. No one can take my work and say it's theirs since it says "Crystal Centeno-Padilla". I think watermarks are super helpful, they are annoying, but everyone always steals photographs and calls them their own, so a watermark will prevent someone taking your work. Although, you actually have to register your photos with the US Copyright Office to legally protect your work.
